We joined every airframe on the FAA registry against 60+ years of NTSB accident records and ranked models with 300 or more airframes by accident records per 100 airframes ever registered.
How to read this (and how not to)
This is records per airframe, not an accident rate: public data contains no flight-hours exposure, so models that fly more — trainers, bush planes, crop dusters — accumulate more records per airframe than hangar queens, regardless of design safety. Fatal counts reflect the NTSB’s highest-injury classification. Treat this as a map of where the records are, not a safety verdict.
Method
Airframe counts come from the FAA Releasable Aircraft Database (current registrations plus the deregistered historical file), grouped by manufacturer and model as recorded by the FAA. Accident records come from the NTSB aviation accident database (1962– present), linked to airframes by registration number and assignment window. Models with fewer than 300 airframes are excluded to reduce small-fleet noise. Data refreshes daily; see the full methodology.
